In our program, your mentor works with you to break your goals up into specific weekly activities, designed to be constrained, relevant, and escalating in difficulty. They will provide an overview of these projects in your Learning Plan, but then adjust them as you go to make sure that they are meeting your goals and focusing on the areas of most relevance to you.

We went to NAMM, and you should too. It was huge, the traffic was horrible, the parking was tough, but it’s a total game-changer for musicians everywhere.

“I have a fictitious person I write for. And she’s called Doris, and she’s from Bradford and she wears a raincoat and she has two horrible little kids that are giving her nothing but grief. And you know, the man left her a while back. And she just, in the rain, everyday, trudges to work and she works hard.”

Following one of the first major hip-hop settlements between De La Soul and The Turtles in 1989, Biz Markie was sued over his hit single “Alone Again.” Markie’s song samples the piano chords from Gilbert O’Sullivan’s “Alone Again (Naturally)” and uses the same lyrical hook. Markie’s record label initially tried to get the rights to “Alone Again (Naturally),” but when O’Sullivan refused, the label released the song anyway. Markie was in turn found guilty of copyright infringement.

The bottom line is, a lot of banks don’t know what to do with you if you’re a working-class songwriter. If you’re one of the few who has major hits on the radio right now with gold records and Grammys adorning your office, they’re a bit more comfortable loaning you money. The groove may be simple, but its relationship to the song’s chord progression is not. To learn much more about chords and harmony and how they build the emotional structure of a song, you can check out our new course Unlocking the Emotional Power of Chords, but consider this a primer in case you’re ready.

Like any new entrepreneur, songwriters may themselves experience cash flow problems and look for additional financing to keep the lights on. However, unlike businesses that have inventory to put up as collateral, songwriters have only their intellectual property and the royalties that property can earn. This limits the options from traditional banking sources and requires songwriters to seek out alternative funding that’s available as an advance against royalties or from selling some rights in exchange for quick cash.
