Rappers 2018

As I mentioned before, streaming services ingest about 20,000 new songs every single day, and the classification of those songs is still a manual process. We can accurately classify all songs before they are ingested into a music catalog so that they can be part of the recommendation and discovery algorithms immediately. More importantly, we can identify duplicate songs, erroneous artist profiles, and many other things.

MTV helped break punk in the ’80s, ’90s, and continued through the ’00s with so many alt-rock bands that have become classic simply by virtue of their televised videos. Regardless of what the content of MTV has become of late, we still have a lot to be thankful for in the past.

If things went according to plan, you probably made new friends and fans over the course of the tour. Now that you’re home, you’re noticing a bump in your social following and you have new people asking when you’re coming back to their town.

If you sample someone else’s music, make sure you’ve covered all your bases too. Reach out to the original songwriter to discuss splits and obtain a mechanical license to use their sample in your music, and then register and administer the percentage that you both agree upon. Don’t find yourself in a sticky situation — do your homework and know how to properly go about using samples.

You may not like this one (I’m not a huge fan of running either) but it is free, it is exercise, the endorphins will feel great, and it’s a great way to explore a city! Go for runs through the town or Google good running paths in local parks. It’s really easy to get stuck in a van or get used to sitting on the computer or your phone, which definitely leads to back and neck issues, depression and a general shit mood.

We all know that sound is a wave. The curves and spikes of our friend the “waveform” are a graphic representation of that wave’s action, traveling physically through air. If I clap my hands and record it into my DAW, the peaks and troughs on the screen represent the fluctuating changes in air pressure that cause the sensory phenomenon we call sound. These ripples of pressure in the air make our eardrums vibrate, so we can hear that sound.

There’s something else important to realize about this: You don’t necessarily need an expensive coach or trainer to give you feedback. Often you provide yourself with the most important feedback. Here’s a great paragraph from Dr. Ericsson, referencing someone who was trying to learn how to memorize ever-longer strings of numbers:

Ordinary income is just that — money earned for the work you do. For songwriters, the money you earn from royalties is considered ordinary income. The tax rate you pay depends on how much you make, from as low as 10% of taxable earnings to as high as 39.6%.

“Havana”: The only thing that stands out for me here is the bold choice in janky piano samples, just pitchy enough to transport you to the world of well-preserved cars and state socialism. It’s also subjective whether it’s a different chord change, or just a different arrangement of the same chord change that happens when Young Thug comes in. I’ll tell you one thing, nobody on the dang dance floor cares if the implied chords are diminished or dominant.

Quick tip: Although some of us still have cars old enough to have tape decks, or keep actual physical radios around to leave on for our dogs while we’re gone (just me?), you’d probably do well to also provide a digital download card so fans can love the nostalgia while being able to listen in the modern age.

Patrick McGuire is a writer, musician and human man. He lives nowhere in particular, creates music under the name Straight White Teeth, and has a great affinity for dogs and putting his hands in his pockets.

But to begin with, let’s approach these phenomena with a sound much simpler than a hand clap — a sinusoidal (or sine) wave. If we depict it as a waveform (like in the above graphic), we’ll see a signal that passes smoothly from peak to trough and back again with beautiful, equal curves on either end.

Powered by data from the online streaming radio platform Pandora, Next Big Sound (NBS) is essentially a giant analytics-based service that gives artists access to everything they need to know to make informed decisions about their next digital move. They also help to bridge the gaps and patch the holes between artists and their fans.
