I’m an adept editor and manipulator of audio, and am getting to be a solid improviser on a synth. But Serato is like editing audio while it plays in real time, or like performing on a synth made out of a song.
So, now that you’re equipped with some of the tools and knowledge of the most common forms of song structure, keep in mind yet again that there are no rules to songwriting! There are only basic ideas and pieces of advice that you can borrow from as you sit down and create something that’s meaningful to you! It’s helpful to have these weapons in your arsenal. When it comes down to it, the best thing you can do as a new songwriter experimenting with song structure is to try and write with all kinds of structures and figure out what works best for you.
“Sicko Mode”: Wow! So this song is basically three songs in one. Part one is Drake singing in B♭ major pentatonic over a digi-cricket-wahwah-fog of harmonies that broke my brain so hard I had to use a lifeline. Thankfully, Martin Fowler on the Soundfly staff pegged it for me as Cm9 to B♭Maj7, which then switched the voicing just barely to E♭Maj7 and a D7♭13 without the C. What a thick mess!
Again this element can be taken as lightly or seriously as you want — from t-shirts and jeans to tuxedos to fully customized outfits, masks, wigs, props, etc. — but it’s always something you need to be aware of. It’s still Home Recording Week here on Soundfly and beyond, so for those of you who have made a commitment to yourselves to produce better music in the comfort of your own home, we’ve got a ton of helpful resources to help you improve your knowledge, skills, and strategies.
In addition to tax returns and detailed income statements, lenders often ask for a profit and loss statement. This may throw you for a loop considering it’s something normally asked of a business not an individual, but in the bank’s eyes you are a business since you are a 1099 contractor!
Exclusively on our Instagram account, we’ll be sharing videos and stories instructing some fun and modern aspects of home production. (By the way, we issue fun production and composition challenges every month, and follow them down the rabbit hole ourselves with you. Follow us to see what happens and join in!)
You can listen to Terminal on Bandcamp, and he’s also worth reading: “When people talk to me, whether it be the press or peers in the scene I operate in, I am often approached with a preconceived notion of pretty much everything from my influences and taste to my politics and lifestyle, solely based on my nationality. It is a caricature that has proven very marketable, one that makes for a more interesting read/conversation/booking, apparently, than a multi-faceted (hence unique) human personality just like each and every one of us.”
